Schools are facing a potential crisis in the recruitment and retention of staff to middle and senior leadership positions. This situation is likely to worsen over the next ten years. Schools, LEAs and national bodies should regard leadership talent development as a key strategic issue. The development of staff to take on more senior roles should be seen by all school leaders, at all levels, as the major part of their leadership role. Collective and integrated action at national, local and school levels is required to meet the future demands for school leaders.

Culture for Learning Report
An investigation into the values and beliefs associated with effective schools. From November 2003 to January 2004 over 4000 teachers in 134 different schools – primary, secondary and special – took part in a unique experiment. Facilitated by materials and analysis from Hay Group they dug deep into their school’s collective psyche, examining the beliefs and values which guided their work. The results show an interesting link between school culture and performance.
